Rancid plans new album, tour

  • 12-4-2008

Rancid is working on a new album that is expected to drop around the same time the punk-rockers dive into their first North American tour since 2006.The band, which is currently wrapping a short tour of Japan, will kick off the North American trek June 10 in Tucson, AZ, and visit clubs and theaters across the US and a few in Canada through mid-August. Two-night stands are booked in Chicago, Toronto and Montreal, and the outing currently wraps with a five-night engagement in New York City.Earlier this year, Rancid entered the studio with its longtime producer, Brett Gurewitz, to begin recording its seventh album. The yet-to-be-titled set will follow 2003's "Indestructible," which peaked at No. 15 on The Billboard 200 and spawned modern-rock hit "Fall Back Down."In December, the band offered up "Rancid B Sides & C Sides," which includes previously unreleased material alongside songs that have been featured on compilations, soundtracks and B-sides.
Since "Indestructible," the members of Rancid have been busy with other projects. Guitarist Lars Frederiksen released his second solo album, "Viking," in 2004, while singer Tim Armstrong recorded "Haunted Cities" with the Transplants in 2005 and released a solo record, "A Poet's Life," last year. Bassist Matt Freeman's skills were put to good use on the Transplants record and tour, and he also hit the road with Social Distortion. The musicians formed Rancid in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early '90s. The band's most commercially successful album to date is 1995's "... And Out Come the Wolves," which spawned the hits "Ruby Soho," "Time Bomb" and "Roots Radicals."
